  What is NixVPS?

NixVPS is a Virtual Private Server solution that is at current the most advanced step in server virtualization technology. It is used to partition a single physical server into many isolated virtual private servers where each virtual private server looks and behaves exactly like a real networked server system, complete with its own set of init scripts, users, processes, filesystem, etc.

Each NixVPS instance behaves exactly like an isolated stand-alone server

 

- has its own processes, users, files and provides full root access
- has its own IP addresses, port numbers, filtering and routing rules
- has its own configuration files for the system and app. software
- has its own versions of system libraries or modify existing ones
- can delete, add, modify any file, including files in /root, and install its own application software or custom configure/modify root application software

Here at Nixperience, we use the Xen virtualization system because it's simply the state of the art in virtual private server solutioning. With Xen, end users enjoy short cpu, hard drive and network latencies, a direct result of the accurate scheduling mechanism deployed by Xen.

Xen is totally different from other virtualization technologies like UML, vServer or Virtuozzo. In Xen, memory is not shared and is not burstable among users. The physical memory and physical disk space is split up and given to each Xen instance as a dedicated resource. There is no sharing and certainly not a chance for overselling by the provider. Each Xen instance has its own dedicated resource and that's the beauty of the technology.
